Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Earn Initial Victories After Recent Arrests

NBA game action

Miami recorded 86 first-half scores against the Memphis Grizzlies

Miami Heat earned a crushing 146-114 win over the Grizzlies in their first basketball game since player Rozier was arrested for suspected unlawful gambling.

Portland Trail Blazers head coach Billups was also detained as part of a broad federal probe into illegal gambling. Both men contest the allegations.

However, the Miami team were not distracted as they recorded eighty-six first-half scores to lead Memphis by thirty-nine at halftime, the largest halftime lead in the franchise's 37 year existence.

Bam Adebayo led the way with twenty-four points and later said Rozier had the support of the team.

"We stand behind him. Full support," Bam said. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother at the end of the day."

Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Terry is somebody who is important to everyone. He's had a beneficial influence on our locker room.

"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he faces this."

Portland also secured their initial match since the arrests, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter taking over as interim coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and guiding the squad to a decisive 139-119 victory against the Warriors.

"Everyone experienced great experiences with Chauncey and his coaching style," Splitter remarked. "We're thinking of him and his family but our focus is on the game."

League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' by Arrests

Speaking about the arrests for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the recent days.

"Nothing is more critical to the league and its fans than the integrity of the game," he told Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."

Silver further mentioned an league probe into Rozier's conduct in March 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he played for the Charlotte Hornets versus the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.

"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the gambling firms," he added.

"We investigated the matter and were open regarding it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, found no evidence.

"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the NBA is unable to.

"So, we've been working with them since then. And, of course, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.

"And two and a half years later, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in justice to Terry.

"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a balance in this case between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
