Pacific Bluefin Fish Sells for Historic Bid of $3.2m at Japanese Capital Auction
A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the year.
The successful offer for the 243-kilogram fish was submitted by the parent firm of a popular sushi restaurant group, which operates restaurants throughout Japan and internationally.
"The year's tuna signals a prosperous start," stated the business owner, a regular bidder at the annual first sale.
Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this entrepreneur is famous for making substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic new year auctions.
Auction Surprise and Record-Setting Precedent
Following the auction, the successful bidder informed the press that he was "surprised at the final price," adding, "I believed we would be able to purchase it a little at a lower price, but the price escalated before you knew it."
This new purchase tops his previous record purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
- In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).
Despite previously remarking that he thought he "bid too high," he has now managed to shatter his personal record once again.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically known for exceptionally high prices. Last year, the first tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a separate culinary group, which stated the fish would be served at its locations across Japan.
The frenetic energy at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a must-see tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
Immediate Consumption
The multi-million-dollar tuna was shortly thereafter sliced up for patrons at the winner's sushi chains soon after the auction concluded.
"I believe like I've started the year in a good way after tasting something so auspicious as the year starts," remarked one elated customer.
